Sugar Land Elected Officials
Sugar Land operates under the council-manager form of government. Under this system, City Council appoints the city manager, who acts as the chief executive officer of the government. The city manager carries out policy and administers city programs. All department heads - including the city attorney, police chief and fire chief - are ultimately responsible to the city manager. The Mayor and Council serve staggered two-year terms.

The Commonwealth sits in Sugar Land’s District 4. The District 4 Councilmember directly represents The Commonwealth and appears on our ballot every two years. A mayoral candidate is also voted on every two years. Additionally, there are two at-large councilmembers to vote for. Both of these are directly accountable to residents of The Commonwealth. They appear on the ballot in even number years, along with the Mayor.
